My Year of Darwin 3/13/2014:among the most feared

 Charles Darwin

"Conscious of its power, it roams by day about the open plain, and  fears dog nor man.... Certain it is, that every animal most willingly makes room for Zorillos"  Charles Darwin, Voyage of the Beagle

What animal could instill such fear about the country side? A giant ferocious predator?

It's a skunk.
