The FDA reports on the case of a Virginian that was poisoned by a pufferfish. To eat puffer fish from the Pacific the fish must be prepared by certified Japanese chefs - this was not. No information was provided on the fate of the individual.
Puffer fish from the Atlantic pose no threat an do not have the tetrodotoxin found in the Pacific puffers. My advice, if you want to eat puffer, eat a flounder.
