Darwin is speaking about Richard Owen, famous for giving us the word dinosaur and opposing evolution. Owen publicly humiliated a fellow natural historian in public. Origin would not be out for another 8 years but we see some contempt for Owen already.
I wish I could follow this more closely but when I read Facebook posts by anti-vaxers, Food Babe's mindless followers and their ilk... blood boils.
