My Year of Darwin 9/7/2014: Darwin, the not-so-cruel father

 Charles Darwin

"I am very glad indeed to hear that you are in the sixth; & I do not care how difficult you find the work: am I not a kind father?"  Charles Darwin, letter to his son "Willy", February 1857

I include this one because I found it particularly funny. Darwin probably chuckled to himself and Willy probably dropped his jaw then laughed. Darwin is now father to six boys and laments to Hooker, as a sign of the times, how much it is going to cost to educate them. No mention of his daughters. As a father of a daughter spying ivy league schools, I'm approaching mortal levels of stress.
