"the wingless condition of so many Madeira beetles is mainly due to the action of natural selection, but combined probably with disuse." Charles Darwin, Origin of Species 1st edition (on Kindle)
It's not just Madeira but many islands are associated with flightless or nearly flightless beetles - this promotes speciation, btw. What I find most interesting is that Darwin buys into Lamarkian evolution even when he doesn't need to! I wonder then, what he finds lacking about natural selection.
Not a flightless beetle but a black gray squirrel at the Bronx Zoo.
