"It makes the works of God a mere mockery and deception; I would almost as soon believe with the old and ignorant cosmogonist, that fossil shells had never lived, but had been created in stone so as to mock the shells now living on the sea-shore." Charles Darwin, Origin of Species 1st edition (on Kindle)
Darwin is speaking about animals in the same genus but one varies and the other is constant (does not vary). This is the man that waited 20 years to publish because he didn't want to step on the toes of the believe? That's not the man here.
