My Year of Darwin 10/16/2014: Testing natural selection with independent data

 Charles Darwin

"I further believe, that this very slow, intermittent action of natural selection accords perfectly well with what geology tells us of the rate and manner at which the inhabitants of this world have changed." Charles Darwin, Origin of Species 1st edition (on Kindle)

The best tests of theories (not hypotheses) is the congruence with independent data. Natural selection can be tested in the lab but how does natural selection explain the diversity of life? In that case, we should observe changes in phenotypes over time. And we do and the changes are less than what we see with artificial selection.
