My Year of Darwin 12/15/2014: Calling all ecologists!

 Charles Darwin

"We need not marvel at extinction; if we must marvel, let it be at our presumption in imagining for a moment that we understand the many complex contingencies, on which the existence of each species depends. If we forget for an instant, that each species tends to increase inordinately, and that some check is always in action, yet seldom perceived by us, the whole economy of nature will be utterly obscured"  Charles Darwin, Origin of Species 1st edition (on Kindle)

This sounds like a call for ecologists to step it up. After the Origin of Species ecologists did but this was largely due to the rise of better science in all fields (as science is apt to do).

  1. I guess it is the reflection of a currently wacky mood that this is the first thing that came to mind when I read this post. Paydirt around 1:40 of the clip:

  2. That's good stuff. And it made me think of the penguin hunting episode of Futurama.
