My Year of Darwin 12/22/2014: Second great fact of biogeography

 Charles Darwin

"barriers of any kind, or obstacles to free migration, are related in a close and important manner to the differences between the productions of various regionsCharles Darwin, Origin of Species 1st edition (on Kindle)

When I was in Brazil, I remember that my species list hit an asymptote at something like 180 species (that is not very impressive for the Manaus area) but I was mostly getting the same birds over and over. I took a birding trip across the Amazon and added 120 new species to my list in three hours. There was a toucan on one side just like the toucan on the other but a different species, and so on.
